Well, we did it! Team IDRC completed the relay in 3h 58m – just under four hours! We had beautiful weather for the run, and everyone had fun.
I clocked a “personal best” (which probably wasn’t hard, considering I’ve only run one other 5k!). By my watch, I took 32m 14s for just under 5k (my time earlier this summer in the Harry Rosen 5k was 42m 09s). I didn’t reach my original goal of under 30 minutes, but when I started today, I was hoping to finish under 33 minutes, so I’m very happy.
Running in a relay was a very interesting experience. We were a team of seven people, but we didn’t actually run together. I briefly saw James when he finished and “passed the baton” to me (there was no actual baton), and I briefly saw Erin when I finished and “passed the baton” to her, but other than that, we didn’t see each other until we all met up at Queen’s Park for a team photo at the finish line. It was a lot of fun, but I wonder how the experience would be different if we tried actually all running a race together. Perhaps not a marathon, but maybe a 5k? Maybe next year…
So what will your next goal be?
